KAITLYN STUBBS
ARTIST STATEMENT
Completion, wholeness, and tranquility are elusive in our contemporary culture. Seemingly endless bombardment from media, advertising, and technology constantly evacuates us from our present time and space. In my work, I explore the experience of living in a society that fragments our identities. I make paintings that conflate multiple images onto a single plane. In keeping with methods seen in film montage and double exposure photography, I layer, fragment and compress images though the use of various technologies. In synthesizing images, I seek not to abstract reality, but rather to create a more whole representation of reality. I believe perception is a combination of space, time, body and consciousness. I want this perceptual belief present in my work; therefore I extrapolate on the fact that paintings innately still moments and conflate time. I choose to acknowledge the fragmented existence of today, while also providing a new, alternative wholeness for the viewer.
